On 22–28 September, the opening of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly will be marked at the UN Headquarters in New York. The high-level General Debate and several high-level meetings will be held in conjunction with the opening session. The Government will be represented by Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard and Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed. Ms Malmer Stenergard is leading Sweden’s delegation.
Sweden’s focus during the high-level week will include strengthening global support for Ukraine, safeguarding international law and the rules-based international order, and defending established norms and agreements on gender equality.
High-level meetings will be held on topics such as existential threats from sea level rise and the importance of strengthened pandemic preparedness and global access to vaccinations. The anniversary of the Durban Declaration on racism and intolerance and the right to development will also be observed.
On 24 September, Ms Malmer Stenergard will host an event together with UN Women on women’s economic empowerment. Mr Forssmed will take part in the high-level meeting on pandemic preparedness.
