Newborn babies and people who have never held a Swedish passport, national identity card or been registered in Sweden, need to get a Swedish coordination number before they can apply for a Swedish passport.
Children born before 1 April 2015
If the child's father is a Swedish citizen but not the child's mother, and the parents are not married to each other, an application for Swedish citizenship has to be made for the child before one can apply for the Swedish coordination number.
Children born after 1 April 2015
Children born after 1 April 2015 will automatically become Swedish citizen if either parent is a Swedish citizen and can directly request a Swedish coordination number at the Embassy or consulate.
Request for Swedish coordination number
A Swedish coordination number corresponds to the Swedish personal identity number, but is given to children who are born abroad and who were not registered in Sweden. The request for the Swedish coordination number can be made by visiting the Embassy. The child must be present when the application is filed, and must be accompanied by at least one legal guardian/parent. The Swedish coordination number is free of charge and the processing time is approximately 8 weeks. Priority is not granted except upon death, war or equivalent. Please note that the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) require a birth notice from the hospital for Swedish mothers who are or have ever been registered in Sweden.
The following documents are required in original:
- A completed name application form SKV 7750, signed by both parents/legal guardians. The form is available at the Embassy, or to download from the Swedish Tax Agency's website. Important information on how to fill out the forms and other ifnormation for new parents is available here at the Swedish Tax Agency's web.
- The child's birth certificate. For Rwandans, a certiifcate from IREMBO with a QR-code is of preference, read more here on IREMBO's web about how to apply for a birth certificate.
- A birth notification from the hospital in the original. (If the mother is Swedish and is or has ever been registered in Sweden).
- Legal proof of guardianship, if legal custody has been granted to one parent or to another person.
- Other valid photo ID of the child, if the child holds another citizenship.
- The form "Verification of Swedish Citizenship" must be completed, printed, and signed by the Swedish citizen parent/legal guardian. Please note that it should be completed with information pertaining to the parent, not the child.
- A copy of parents' marriage certificate if the father is Swedish but not the mother and the baby is born before April 1, 2015. For Rwandans, this is evident in the birth certificate issued by IREMBO.
- Paternity Acknowledgment/Acknowledgment of Parentage, if parents were not married at child's birth.
- Both parents/legal guardians' passports.
- Valid photo ID with clearly visible signature for a foreign citizen parent, e.g. passport or driver's license. Please note that ID for both parents must be presented.
- A copy of any decision by the Swedish Migration Board on the retention of Swedish citizenship if there is a risk that the Swedish parent/legal guardian lost his/her Swedish citizenship at the age of 22. Read more here on The Swedish Migration Agency web about losing Swedish citizenship.
- All copies should be certified by the Embassy.
