How to appeal a negative Schengen visa decision?

An appeal must reach the Embassy within 21 days of receiving the decision. Due to GDPR regulations, the Embassy recommends sending appeals by mail (however, appeals received by email will also be accepted). Appeals may be submitted to the Embassy only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Please note that no original documents of value should be submitted with the appeal and that all documents must be in French, English, or Swedish.

The appeal must include the following:

  • The case number (found on the decision) along with the applicant's name, address, and telephone number.
  • The reference number of the decision in question, along with a statement of reasons why the decision is considered incorrect and the desired amendment.
  • If someone other than the applicant is appealing the decision, the power of attorney must be included in the appeal.
  • The signature of the applicant or the person holding the power of attorney. You may submit additional documents, but please avoid submitting the same documents you submitted with your application and the decision.

Here is an example of a power of attorney that can be used.

The Embassy will then review whether the decision needs to be amended. If no changes are made, the case will be referred to the Swedish administrative courts of appeal for migration affairs.
