Required documents

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and wish to move to a family member in Sweden who is not a citizen of the EU/EEA either, you need the documents below.

If you apply online, you attach the documents electronically. However, you have to present the originals of the documents when you visit the embassy.

If you apply on a paper form, you have to bring all the requisite documents to the embassy, together with the completed special application form described below.

Required Documents 

If you apply online, you attach the documents electronically. At the time of your interview you have to present the originals of all the submitted documents to the embassy. You find all relevant information on what documents to enclose on the website of the Swedish Migration Agency. https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Moving-to-someone-in-Sweden.html Choose the relevant heading for your situation. You also have to bring your passport in original.

If you apply on a paper form, you have to bring all the required documents to the embassy, together with a completed application form and the form “Family details”. They are both found on the links below.

Document requirements

The forms must be completed in English. Documents issued by the authorities in your country of origin are to be submitted together with a translation in English by an authorised translator.

Documents required by all applicants

 You need:

  • A valid passport or travel document. We must see the original and you must submit a copy when you apply. 
  • A recent coloured photograph (passport size, clear face and white background).
  • Also for the person living in Sweden: a copy of the passport or Swedish residence permit
  • If you are not applying online, you need the form Application for residence permit to settle in Sweden, form no. 161011, and the form Family details, no. 239011. See heading below for information about children.
  • A copy of the death certificate (when relevant)

Married couples

If you are married, you need the following:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • Questioneer form for married persons/common law spouses and accompanying children
  • Wedding certificate or marriage certificate
  • Proof of national registration, a rental contract or proof of sale for your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden).
  • A few printed out pictures showing the applicant and the referent together if available (for newly established relationships).

Unmarried couples

If you are not married, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • Questionnaire form for persons who are planning to marry or cohabit as well as their accompanying children
  • Proof of national identity or other document showing that you are not married
  • Proof of national registration, a rental contract or proof of sale for your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden)
  • A few printed out pictures showing the applicant and the referent together if available (for newly established relationships).

Children under age

If you have children under 18 accompanying you to Sweden you can apply for a residence permit for them in your online application.

Children under age need:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • Questioneer form for minors with parents in Sweden
  • If you are not applying online or if the child is applying alone, form no. 163011, Application for a residence permit for a child under the age of 18 to settle in Swedenand form no. 239011Family details.
  • Birth or kinship certificate.
  • A court order showing the custody for the child, in the case only one parent is applying  

Other close relatives

Other close relatives are members of your family other than your husband/wife/common law spouse, a minor or the parent of a minor.

If you are in this category, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • Questionnaire form regarding membership of a joint household
  • A document certifying that you and your relative are dependent on each other and have difficulty living apart, e.g. for social, emotional or financial reasons
  • A document showing how you are related
  • A document showing that you lived together immediately before the relative moved to Sweden
