On this page, the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra has compiled links to the Swedish Tax Agency's information on population registration in Sweden, including moving to or from Sweden, identity numbers, and population registration certificates.
The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) is responsible for matters relating to population registration in Sweden.
If you have questions regarding population registration in Sweden, please contact the Swedish Tax Agency.
If you move to Sweden and plan to live in Sweden for one year or more, in most circumstances, you should be listed in the Swedish Population Register. You must therefore notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move.
If you are registered in the Swedish population register and have a personal identity number, and you are planning to move abroad for a year or more, you should notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your plans. The same applies if you originally planned to remain abroad for a shorter time but then decided to extend your stay to a year or more. If you live abroad and change address, you can also notify the Swedish Tax Agency, this also applies for you who have a coordination number.
There are two different types of Swedish identity numbers that may be assigned to an individual by the Swedish Tax Agency, a personal identity number (personnummer) or a coordination number (samordningsnummer).
A population registration certificate (personbevis) is an extract of the Swedish population register showing the information that is registered about you in the population register. You can order different types of extracts depending on what you intend to use them for.
You may apply to change your name in the Swedish population register. Please note that if you change your name and subsequently apply for a new Swedish passport or national ID card, the name change must first be registered with the Swedish Tax Agency before an application for a new passport or ID card can be submitted.
