Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about applying for or collecting Swedish passports/national ID cards.

How do I apply for a passport/national ID card?

Applications for Swedish ordinary passports/national ID cards, or emergency passports, can only be made via an in-person visit. It is not possible to apply via post or online.

Where can I apply for a passport/national ID card in Australia?

In Australia, applications for Swedish ordinary passports/national ID cards can only be made at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra. It is not possible to apply at any of Sweden's Honorary Consulates.

Applications for Swedish emergency passports can be made at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, and at all of Sweden’s Honorary Consulates. Swedish emergency passports issued abroad are in A4-paper format, and they are neither biometric nor machine readable. No technical equipment is required to receive such an application.

Must I renew my passport/national ID card before it expires?

It is possible to apply for a new Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card after the previous one has expired. Please note however that if your previous passport/ID card has expired, you must be able to prove your identity in another approved way at the time of application.

Do I need to book an appointment to apply?

Yes, to apply for a Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card or emergency passport in Australia, a pre-booked appointment is required. 

How do I book an appointment? Or manage my existing booking?

Appointments to apply for a Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, are booked online via the Embassy's e-booking system. If you need to change or cancel an existing appointment, this is also done via the e-booking system.

Appointments to apply for an emergency passport at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, or one of Sweden's Honorary Consulates, are booked via telephone or email. If you need to change or cancel an existing appointment, this is also done via telephone or email.

There are no appointments to book online, what do I do?

If you want to book an appointment to apply for a Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, and no appointments are shown in the e-booking system, it means that the appointments that have been released so far are currently all booked. You can then check again at a later time for potential cancellations, or new appointments which are released continuously. Please note that if there are no appointments available to book online, it is not possible to book an appointment by telephone or email either. 

If I apply at one place, can I collect at another?

Yes, at the time of application for a Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card (in Sweden or abroad), any passport office in Sweden, or Swedish passport authority abroad, can be nominated as the delivery location.

A Swedish ordinary passport/national ID card that arrives at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, can either be collected at the Embassy, or forwarded from the Embassy for collection at any of Sweden’s Honorary Consulates within the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra’s geographical area.

My passport/national ID card has arrived at the Embassy even though I have advised I want to collect it at an Honorary Consulate, has something gone wrong?

In Australia, all Swedish ordinary passports/national ID cards will initially arrive at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra. If you have already advised the Embassy that you want to collect the passport/ID card at a Swedish Honorary Consulate, you do not need to contact the Embassy again. The passport/ID card will automatically be forwarded from the Embassy to your pre-selected final point of delivery, who in turn will contact you when it has arrived and is ready to be collected.
