Driving licence

If you renew your Swedish driving licence, you can choose to collect it in Australia.

The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) is responsible for matters relating to Swedish driving licences. 

On the Swedish Transport Agency's website, you can find information about Swedish driving licences, including renewals and what to do if your licence has been lost, stolen or damaged.

Application forms

Application forms for Swedish driving licences can be ordered through the Swedish Transport Agency’s customer service. In Australia, they can be collected from the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra or from one of Sweden’s Honorary Consulates.

How to collect application form or driving licence

In Australia, application forms and new driving licences can be collected:

  • In person at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.
  • In person at the Honorary Consulates of Sweden in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Application forms can be collected by someone other than the applicant, provided that the person has a booked appointment at the Embassy or Consulate.

When the driving licence arrives at the Embassy

Driving licences to be collected in Australia are first sent to the Embassy in Canberra and, if required, forwarded to the selected Honorary Consulate. You will receive an email notification when the licence has arrived or has been forwarded. 

Checklist

The following applies if you wish to visit the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra or an Honorary Consulate in Australia to collect a Swedish driving licence:

  1. Await email confirmation from Embassy: You are notified when the driving licence has arrived at the Embassy (if it is to be collected there), otherwise when it has been forwarded to an Honorary Consulate.

  2. Collect on time: The driving licence must be collected within one month of receiving notification that it has arrived. After that, it will be returned to the Swedish Transport Agency.

  3. Book an appointment: Send your appointment request by email:
    - Embassy: embassy.canberra@gov.se.
    - Honorary Consulate: Contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.

  4. Personal attendance: You must collect your own driving licence.

  5. Check payment methods: You must pay a collection fee (the amount varies depending on whether the renewal process was initiated in Sweden or abroad). Please note that only certain payment methods are accepted. You must check in advance what applies at the Embassy or Consulate. More information can be found here: Fees and payment methods.

  6. Proof of identity: You must present valid photo ID, the following are accepted:
    - Swedish driving licence, national ID card, or passport
    - Swedish ID card issued by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)
    - SIS-approved company card, service card, or ID card
    - Foreign national ID card issued by another Schengen country
    - Foreign passport showing photo, issuing country, and document number.

  7. Read visitor’s information: Follow any instructions provided before your visit for example about arrival time, parking, and accompanying persons.
