General information about Swedish citizenship

Swedish citizenship can be acquired (obtained) in different ways, including automatically, through an application, or by notification.

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is responsible for matters relating to Swedish citizenship.

On the Swedish Migration Agency’s website, you can find information about Swedish citizenship, including how Swedish citizenship can be acquired, the rules governing dual citizenship, and the possibilities for retaining or regaining Swedish citizenship.

In some cases, a child may become a Swedish citizen automatically for example through birth, adoption, the marriage of their parents, or if a parent becomes a Swedish citizen.

If you are unsure whether you or your child is a Swedish citizen, you may apply for a declaration of citizenship to the Swedish Migration Agency.

If you wish to submit an application or notification relating to Swedish citizenship, you should follow the instructions for the relevant case type on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website, where information is provided on how the application or notification should be submitted. Depending on the type of case, submissions may be made through the Swedish Migration Agency’s e-services, by post, or through a Swedish embassy or consulate outside Sweden.

If you have questions about Swedish citizenship or the processing of an ongoing citizenship application or notification, please contact the Swedish Migration Agency.
