Swedish and dual citizenship

Swedish citizenship can be acquired (obtained) in different ways, for example automatically, by application, or by notification. Please note that new rules entered into force on 6 June 2026.

Sweden permits dual and multiple citizenship. To have dual or multiple citizenship means that a person is a citizen in two or more countries.

New law regulations for Swedish Citizenship

On 6 June 2026, new rules for Swedish citizenship entered into force, which affects those of you who have applied for or will apply for, or register, Swedish citizenship.
