Having a child abroad

If you are Swedish and are or previously have been listed in the Swedish Population Register, and you have had a child outside of Sweden, the child will not become listed in the Swedish Population Register from birth and therefore does not get a Swedish personal identity number.

If you have had a child abroad, it is possible to register the child's name in Sweden by applying for a first name and surname for the child with the Swedish Tax Agency. If the child has acquired (obtained) Swedish citizenship, but you currently do not plan to apply for a first Swedish passport/national ID card for the child, an application for a given name and surname can be sent directly to the Swedish Tax Agency if you want to register the child’s name in Sweden.

Please note that a Swedish citizen who is born and resides outside Sweden, may in some cases lose Swedish citizenship at the age of 22.

SWEDISH PASSPORT/NATIONAL ID CARD

In order to apply for a first Swedish passport/national ID card for a Swedish citizen (regardless of the person’s age) who has never been registered in the Swedish population register, and therefore does not have a Swedish personal identity number, the person must first apply for and be issued a Swedish coordination number by the Swedish Tax Agency. If an application for a given name and surname has not previously been made to the Swedish Tax Agency, this will be done at the same time as the application for the coordination number.
