Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Sweden in Maputo, Mozambique.
The historical ties between Sweden and Mozambique date back to the liberation movement and became official when Sweden opened its Embassy in Maputo in 1975, the year of Mozambique’s independence. The Embassy aims to improve and broaden the relations between Sweden and Mozambique. This is done through engaging in development cooperation with Mozambique and in promoting increased trade relations. We also promote universal values such as democracy, human rights, gender equality and sustainability, which are all fundamental for Sweden.
The Embassy has a team of just over 30 employees, Mozambicans and Swedes, that work with a vast portfolio, from supporting sustainable agriculture and forestry to providing consular assistance to Swedish citizens. One of our most important tasks is to improve opportunities for people living in poverty. This is a long-term commitment, and we are proud to have a development cooperation that focuses on women’s empowerment, peace and conflict, democracy, environment and climate, rural development, including economic development, and research cooperation.
The Embassy also covers Madagascar and Eswatini, where Sweden is represented by honorary consuls.
