Svenska ambassaden i Madrid ligger centralt i hörnet av Calle Zurbano och Calle Caracas. Det palats som senare kom att bli den svenske ambassadörens residens uppfördes år 1894-96.
År 1904 köpte den dåvarande ambassadören, baron Fritz Wedel Jarlsberg, fastigheten för svenska statens räkning. På tomten fanns också tjänarbostad med vagnshus och stallar. Denna byggnad liksom de vackra flygelbyggnaderna är i dag utbytta mot en ny ambassadbyggnad uppförd på 1960-talet. Residensbyggnaden är uppförd i rött tegel och har stuckdekorer i vitt och socklar i grå Guadarramagranit. Den består av källare, tre våningsplan samt vindsvåning och inrymde från början både bostad åt ambassadören och kanslilokaler.
Tegel förenar nytt med gammalt
Efter hand räckte kontorslokalerna i huvudbyggnaden inte till och en ny ambassadbyggnad uppfördes 1962-63. Denna tog i stort den gamla tjänarflygelns plats. Arkitekt var AOS/Ahlgren, Olsson, Silow, byggarbetet leddes av den spanske arkitekten Luis Blanco-Soler. Byggmaterialet var samma röda tegel som hade använts till huvudbyggnaden. Husen förenades med en tegelmur mot entréplanen. För att hindra insyn slöts gatufasaderna nästan helt och tjänsterummen ligger mot gården.
Senare åtgärder
År 2004 skulle ambassaden fira sin 100-årsdag när en kraftig eldsvåda bröt ut i ambassadresidenset vid ett takarbete. Yttertaket och plan tre blev helt förstörda. Statens fastighetsverk (SFV) passade i återställningsarbetet på att göra flera andra förbättringar bland annat av isolering och vattentäthet. I juni 2005 kunde ambassaden fira sin försenade 100-årsdag. År 2011 renoverade SFV fasaden och 2012 tillgänglighetsanpassade SFV entrén.
