About us

Welcome to the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia, Liberia. The Embassy represents Sweden and Swedish interests in Liberia by promoting political, economic and cultural contacts between Sweden and Liberia, as well as by providing consular service for Swedish citizens. The Embassy also manages Sweden’s bilateral development cooperation with Liberia.

The Embassy has staff from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), as well as locally employed staff. It consists of three sections:

  • The Section for Development Cooperation
  • The Section for Political Affairs
  • The Section for Administration

Sweden and Liberia have long-standing relations. The Embassy of Sweden was first established in 1961, but diplomatic relations stretch even further back. A trade agreement between Liberia and the Union between Sweden and Norway was concluded as early as 1864. During the 1960s to 1980s, the Liberian American Swedish Mining Company (LAMCO) was one of Liberia’s largest companies and had many Swedish employees in the country. Sweden was a contributor to the United Nation’s Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). Sweden also actively supported Liberia during the Ebola crisis.

Today, Sweden is one of Liberia’s largest bilateral donors. Sweden’s support is guided by the Strategy for Sweden’s development cooperation with Liberia (2021-2025).The development cooperation focuses on democracy, human rights, gender equality, rule of law, peaceful and inclusive societies, inclusive economic development, preservation of the environment and climate, and sustainable use of natural resources. The strategy is managed by the development cooperation sector of the Embassy and comprises of 1.85 billion SEK over a five-year period. You can read more under the section “Sweden’s Development Cooperation”.

Liberia is a nation in development, offering opportunities for Swedish companies. Swedish companies in their turn have the potential to help the Liberian market progress and boost already emerging sectors like information and connectivity technology (ICT), mining, renewable energy, and transportation. You can read more under the section “Doing business in Liberia”.

The Embassy has a limited mandate to handle Schengen visas for holders of Liberian diplomatic passport. Other Schengen visas (non-business trips), residence permits and work permits for Sweden are handled by the Swedish Embassy in Abuja, you can find more information here.
