About the Embassy

Welcome to the Embassy of Sweden in Skopje, North Macedonia.

Sweden has been present in North Macedonia since 1993 with a consulate, which in 2000 was upgraded into an Office for Cooperation, by introducing bilateral development cooperation managed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). In 2005 the Swedish presence in the country was further strengthened, as the Office for Cooperation was upgraded into an Embassy. The Embassy of Sweden was officially opened on the 25th of August 2005.

The bilateral development cooperation with North Macedonia was phased-out in 2012, but later, by a decision of the Swedish Government it was reinitiated in December 2017. The current bilateral development cooperation is implemented under the Strategy for Sweden's reform cooperation with the Western Balkans and Turkey for 2021-2027

The strategy is implemented by Sida and other actors, including the Swedish Institute and the Folke Bernadotte Academy.

North Macedonia is also receiving Swedish development cooperation support through a range of other Swedish strategies, including civil society sector and global thematic support.

More information about Sweden's development cooperation with North Macedonia is also available on Sida's website. Detailed information on each project that Sweden supports is available on OpenAid.
