Summary of Sweden's Statement at the 100th Session of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), The Hague, 5-8 July 2022, as presented by H.E. Ambassador Johannes Oljelund, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Sweden to the OPCW:

  • Sweden reiterates in the strongest terms its condemnation of the continued brutal and unprovoked aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  • Sweden urges the Syrian Arab Republic to reveal the full extent of its chemical weapons programme and to fully comply with the the Chemical Weapons Convention. Sweden calls on the Syrian Arab Republic to fully cooperate with the OPCW and its Technical Secretariat.
  • Sweden concludes that Russian authorities have again failed to respond to demands of the international community to disclose the circumstances around the assassination attempt on Alexei Navalny, and to fully cooperate with the OPCW to ensure an impartial international investigation. To this end, Sweden reiterates that it is the responsibility of all States, including the Russian Federation, to ensure that the global ban on chemical weapons is respected, and that accountability for the use of chemical weapons must be established and upheld.
  • Sweden is convinced that a gender equality perspective on all aspects of our collective work will strengthen international peace and security. We encourage States Parties to promote women’s participation and strive towards gender-balanced delegations in all disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control fora.
