Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir and jazz pianist Jan Lundgren to Vietnam

25 Feb 2019, 8.00 PM - 02 Mar 2019, 10.00 PM

The Swedish Embassy in Hanoi is proud to present some of the finest from the Swedish jazz- and choir scene: Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir (GSKK), jazz pianist Jan Lundgren and bass player Hans Backenroth. They will do performances in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City at the end of February and beginning of March. The concerts are part of the Embassy’s commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Vietnam.

Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir (GSKK) is an independent choir with 33 singers, founded 1994 in Stockholm. GSKK has since been a distinguished part of Swedish musical life, known for its sound, often described as typical “Nordic”. The choir is devoted to contemporary music and has over the years accumulated a broad repertoire in this field. On the choir’s repertoire is also the classical works by Bach, Mozart and Brahms, but also folk music and jazz. Maestro Gustaf Sjökvist passed away in 2015, and from 2018 Florian Benfer is the artistic leader.

Florian Benfer has a broad experience with many choirs, orchestras, ensembles, both as a conductor and a singer himself. His solid knowledge of repertoire and curiosity on music of all ages, in combination with his technical skills, his inseparable hearing, accuracy and inspiring attitude towards artistic creating made a perfect match with Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir.

Jan Lundgren is part of a remarkable and long tradition of innovative pianists from Sweden like Jan Johansson, Bobo Stenson and Esbjörn Svensson. Lundgren has always tried to utilize his phenomenal technique to enhance his musicality, his ability to integrate the most disparate musical influences into a fascinating whole is unique in itself. Lundgren has a unique way of leading the listener on a voyage of discovery – sometimes relaxed, sometimes utterly invigorating - through his highly individual soundscapes.

Hans Backenroth began playing classical guitar and flute at eight years old at the municipal music school, but changed early to electric bass. With a constant curiosity to get to know and play new music, he discovered jazz at the end of his teens, which led him to play double bass. Since the mid-90s Hans is considered to be one of Scandinavia's premier bassists.
