FILM & LECTURES: Bergman Centennial Summer

01 Jul 2018 - 10 Sep 2018

This summer, the National Gallery of Art, the American Film Institute, and the Embassy of Sweden celebrate the life, work, and legacy of iconic Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman. This year marks what would have been Bergman’s 100th birthday, and the Bergman Centennial Year is being celebrated all over the world.

The National Gallery of Art, the American Film Institute, and the Embassy of Sweden have collaborated to create a unique film experience for audiences in the greater DC metro region, with more than 75 film screenings (many in rarely seen original formats), expert seminars, and exhibitions that allow Bergman fans to dive deeper into his work. These celebrations are made possible with the support of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, the Swedish Film Institute, and the Swedish Institute.

The National Gallery of Art’s screenings highlight Bergman’s early works from the 1940s and 1950s. Films are shown in the East Building Auditorium in original formats whenever possible between July 1 - September 3. For a full list of film screenings, please see: https://www.nga.gov/calendar/film-programs.html

Lecture
Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) and the Visual Arts - David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art on July 29 at 2:00 pm, East Building Auditorium.

The American Film Institute's Silver Theatre will highlight Bergman’s later, more mature work, with a 26-film series beginning on July 13 — one day before the centennial of the birth of the legendary director. As a grand finale, the Embassy of Sweden will be screening SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, a highly-acclaimed comedy sparkling with erotic energy and romantic misadventures in the garden of the Residence of the Swedish Ambassador on September 11. More information will be available shortly.
