Meaning in the Music: A Conversational Duet with Fantastic Negrito and Timbuktu

14 Oct 2020

Bay Area Book Festival #UNBOUND presents the virtual event: Meaning in the Music: A Conversational Duet with Fantastic Negrito and Timbuktu

Music is one of our greatest universal languages. Few have demonstrated this more boldly than rappers Fantastic Negrito and Timbuktu, whose respective journeys from Oakland’s mural-filled streets and Sweden’s inlets now bring them together for an unprecedented #UNBOUND “duet.”
Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité is one of Sweden’s most well-known hip-hop artists. Born in Lund to American parents - an African American father and a white mother - he has released eight solo albums and numerous singles. He has received eight Swedish Grammy awards and four P3 Guld (Swedish radio) awards. Jason is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir A Drop of Midnight, which has sold more than one hundred thousand copies in Sweden and was adapted by the author into a stage performance in 2017.
Fantastic Negrito is a Grammy winner raised in an Orthodox Muslim household and The Guardian describes him as “extraordinary”.  Negrito won the inaugural NPR Tiny Desk contest in 2015, and has since won Grammys for his first two albums: The Last Days of Oakland (2017) and Please Don’t Be Dead (2019). His third album, Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, will be released this year.

Timbuktu and Fantastic Negrito will be discussing the meaning behind the rhythm in a conversational matchup that promises to be as exciting as their music.  Join us for this virtual conversational duet!
