The Mill Valley Film Festival will take place on October 5-15 in theaters in Marin, Berkeley, and San Francisco, as well as online. The program includes the Swedish films Goodbye Julia, The Hypnosis, and The Promised Land.
Goodbye Julia
Director: Mohamed Kordofani
Goodbye Julia is a powerful drama set against the 2011 split of Sudan into two countries. A friendship develops between two women from different religions and social standing but brought together by the violence of men and racist politics. Goodbye Julia is a co-production of Sudan, Egypt, Germany, France, Sweden and Saudi Arabia. Swedish producer Issraa Elkogali Häggström was the first Sudanese student at Sweden’s Royal Academy of Art in 2012.

The Hypnosis
Director: Ernst De Geer
The Hypnosis is Swedish film maker Ernst De Geer’s debut. It is a cringe comedy and touching love story about an aspiring entrepreneur developing a socially conscious phone app with his girlfriend Vera. Right before they attend a crucial business seminar, Vera sees a hypnotherapist to quit her smoking habit and unexpectedly also loses all her inhibitions.

The Promised Land
Director: Nikolaj Arcel
A captivating epic set in the arid no-man’s-landscape known as Danish Jutland in the 1750s. Captain Ludvig seeks to establish a settlement in the name of the Danish King, in the hopes of being rewarded a royal title for himself.
