Energy is a key to development of any economy and to lift people out of poverty, therefor Sweden support the energy sector in Zanzibar. A delegation of senior Zanzibar Energy officials traveled to Sweden for a study tour to Stockholm and Åland Island (in Finland), under the Energy Sector Support Project (ZESS), with support from Sweden.
The delegation got an oppurunity to learn more about the Swedish experience, and find inspiration. This due to the fact that power and renewable energy sector in Zanzibar is going through important reforms to improve services and create functioning markets.
The delegates visted institutions, such as Sida Head Quarters, where they met Africa's head, Hans Magnusson, Power Exchange (Nordpool), the Swedish Energy Agency and the Energy Market Inspectorate (Energimarknadsinspektionen). In Åland, the delegation studied the generation of wind power and the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into an island's energy system. This is the current debate on energy production in Zanzibar today, as they are looking forward to producing solar and wind power. It was a fruitful and informative study tour and for the delegation to see an area where the conditions and challenges resemble their own.
