Dear Swedes in South Africa,
It’s today 125 days since South Africa went into what became one of the world’s most strict lockdowns. Some of the restrictions have now been eased, but we are still at risk level 3 and nowadays also with a formal curfew between 21.00-04.00.
Regular international flights are still prohibited. This may change when and if the country goes down to risk level 2. This feels a bit far away as South Africa is entering the surge towards the peak of the virus transmission. But there are fairly regular repatriation flights or so called charter relief flights operated by among others KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Emirates. The Embassy posts information about some of these on our web page and will also assist with travel certificates for travel to the assembly points.
Until today the Embassy has assisted around 500 Swedes and other citizens with residence permits in Sweden to go back home. Unfortunately it’s not possible today to return to South Africa with these flights, but the Embassy and many of our colleagues are working on getting permission for foreign citizens with residence permits to return to South Africa.
I would like to take this opportunity to say farewell to all of you. My posting here in South Africa has come to an end and I will leave with a repatriation flight on August 2. It has been four fascinating years with change of President, elections, corruption commissions and unfortunately a not so positive economic development. And now the Corona crisis has very clearly shown the great inequalities that still exist in the South African society. A lot still remains to be done and Sweden will remain a partner to South Africa in the strive for a better society here, in Africa and globally.
Unfortunately the Corona crisis means it’s not possible to meet everyone and say a proper goodbye. But thank you for all cooperation and nice meetings through the years.
The Embassy will remain open and provide all necessary service, it book an appointment.
I cannot confirm who will be my successor yet, but for the time being Ami Larson-Jain will be in charge together with the rest of the team.
Thank you for this time and keep safe in the times of Corona!
