Sweden's way to NATO

At the summit in Madrid, NATO member countries decided to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO. As a member, Sweden will contribute to the security of NATO as a whole, in the spirit of solidarity. Sweden’s application for membership of NATO is based on an independent, democratically reached decision.

At the summit in Madrid, NATO member countries decided to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO. On the 5th of July, all NATO members signed the Accession Protocols for Sweden and Finland during the North Atlantic Council meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde took part in the top. “This is truly an historic moment. For Finland, for Sweden, for NATO, and for our shared security.” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
