The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the League of Arab States, and the Swedish Institute Alexandria (SwedAlex) are organizing a capacity building workshop on Gender Equality to support national efforts to prepare National Voluntary Reviews on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, in Alexandria, Egypt, on 16-17 October 2018.
It is worth mentioning that ESCWA signed an agreement with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria to support the work of the sub-committee during 2018. The first workshop which was conducted on voluntary reviews and which presented several national experiences was held in April 2018 in Beirut, Lebanon. This workshop is a continuation of the results of the first workshop and aims to present the guide on the subject.
The workshop will be attended by members of the Sub-Committee on Gender Equality, which includes representatives of national machineries for the advancement of women and gender focal points in national statistical offices. The importance of this type of workshops is to support the leadership role played by national machineries for the advancement of women in collaboration with national statistical offices in monitoring and implementing sustainable development goals with respect to gender equality issues; preparing progress reports, identifying solutions and good practices, and holding consultations with civil society organizations and women's organizations.
It is worth noting that the Sub-Committee for the Implementation of Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals on Gender Equality was established based on the recommendations of the Seventh Session of the ESCWA Committee on Women, held in Muscat in January 2016.
Accordingly, ESCWA, the United Nations Gender Equality Commission and the League of Arab States are working hard to build the capacity of the Sub-Committee on Gender Equality, particularly with regard to Goal 5 and its harmonization with the national policies, taking into account the complementary nature of the objectives. To complement these efforts, this workshop is held to contribute to the development of a framework for the preparation of voluntary national reviews, taking into account women’s priorities as indicated in the SDG’s, noting that 51 countries will submit their voluntary national reviews on the implementation of the 2030 Plan during the 2019 high-level political forum, including 6 Arab countries, namely Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Mauritania, Oman and Tunisia.
The workshop is organized in Alexandria as part of the strategic partnership with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, which contributes effectively to promoting joint work and supporting development issues and human rights as well as women's rights in the Arab region.
