Afghan student Lisa Kakar receives the Global Swede Award

The 28th of May 20202 the master student Ms. Lisa Kakar received the Global Swede Award. Lisa is from Kabul and one of 19 top international students that are recognized as Global Swedes and received an award from Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade Ms. Anna Hallberg.

Lisa Kakar is a master’s student in international business at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. She is also an active proponent of women’s rights. As Lisa herself points out, “Education is the best strategy to liberate women from male domination and this change will appear in Afghanistan by educated men and women like me.” During her time in Luleå, she has not only achieved good study results – she has also worked for Save the Children.


The Global Swede Award is part of the long-term efforts of the Swedish Government and the Swedish Institute to build relations with international students in Sweden. These efforts help to build bridges of multicultural and global networks that, in the long term, have a positive impact on Swedish trade and the efforts to find new solutions for the future. About twenty international students who have attended Swedish higher education institutions are awarded each year. The students have distinguished themselves in areas related to innovation and entrepreneurship and are

positive ambassadors for their home countries and for studying in Sweden.
